Welcome

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Whether you’re passionate about history, nature, heritage, or simply want to give back to your community, volunteering at Wollaton Hall and Deer Park offers a unique and rewarding experience. Our volunteers play a vital role in helping us preserve and share this incredible site with visitors from near and far.

This guide answers some of the most common questions about volunteering with us—from age requirements and training to perks and support. We’re here to help you find a role that suits your interests, skills, and availability.

We look forward to welcoming you to the team!

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Most of our regular volunteering roles are open to individuals aged 18 and over. If you’re under 18, you may still be able to get involved through our Work Experience Programme.

Will I be interviewed?

Most roles involve an informal chat, giving you the chance to learn more about Wollaton and the volunteering opportunity. The recruitment process may vary depending on the role.

Will I be reimbursed for travel expenses?

Unfortunately, we are not able to reimburse travel expenses at this time.

What skills do I need to volunteer?

This depends on the role. Some opportunities require specific skills, while others simply ask for enthusiasm and commitment. All requirements will be clearly outlined in the role description.

Do I get free entry to other museum sites?

Yes! After completing 30 hours and 6 months of volunteering, you’ll receive a Perks Card. This gives you:

  • Free entry to other Nottingham City Council museum sites
  • 10% discount at our museum shops and cafés

Is there free parking available?

We encourage volunteers to use public transport or walk where possible. However free parking is available for volunteers at Wollaton Hall.

What if I don’t enjoy my volunteer role?

That’s absolutely fine! If your role isn’t the right fit, just let us know. We’ll be happy to explore alternative opportunities that might suit you better.

Can I get a reference?

Yes, we’re happy to provide a character reference for active volunteers. Please note: in line with data protection regulations, we only retain volunteer records for six years, so references may not be available after that time.

Do you offer training?

Absolutely. All volunteers receive:

  • full induction
  • Role-specific training  through our buddy up system to help you feel confident and capable
